The Current Situation Of Pakistan and Pakistani Government

The Current Situation in Pakistan

According To The USIP Fact Sheet

_Pakistan is currently dealing with a multitude of internal and external conflicts. The rise of extremism and lack of acceptance for diversity and dissent are posing significant threats to the country's social cohesion and stability. The inadequacy of state institutions to address grievances peacefully has led to the adoption of violence as a means to an end. While the country experienced smooth political transitions after the 2013 and 2018 elections, it is currently grappling with a fragile economy and deepening domestic divisions as it prepares for the upcoming 2023 elections. Furthermore, the widespread flooding in 2022 has caused substantial damage, particularly to the agricultural and health sectors, highlighting Pakistan's vulnerability to climate disasters and revealing weaknesses in governance and economic stability.

On a regional level, there is a resurgence of extremist groups along Pakistan's border with Afghanistan, leading to heightened tensions with the Taliban-led Afghanistan. Despite a ceasefire on the Line of Control in Kashmir in 2021, relations with India remain stagnant and susceptible to crises that could pose a threat to regional and international security. The presence and influence of China, as a major power and close ally of Pakistan, has the potential to both alleviate and exacerbate various internal and external conflicts in the region.

_According To the Work Of USIP:

The U.S. Institute of Peace has been actively involved in research, analysis, and fostering dialogue in Pakistan for over two decades, establishing a physical presence in the country in 2013. The organization’s primary objective is to counteract Pakistan’s increasing intolerance towards diversity and promote greater social cohesion. USIP actively collaborates with local entities to create novel approaches for building peace and advocating inclusive narratives through media, arts, technology, dialogues, and education.

Furthermore, USIP assists government institutions in enhancing their responsiveness to citizens’ needs, with the aim of mitigating the employment of violence as a means of addressing grievances. The Institute extends its support towards initiatives aimed at improving police-community relations, facilitating equitable access to justice, and fortifying inclusive democratic systems and governance. Additionally, USIP is involved in conducting and endorsing research in Pakistan to gain insights into the factors influencing both peace and conflict. This understanding is utilized to shape international policies and programs that foster peace and tolerance within Pakistan, as well as between Pakistan and its neighboring countries, and with the United States.

USIP's Work In Pakistan Includes:

USIP's work in Pakistan encompasses a wide range of initiatives aimed at promoting peace, tolerance, and effective governance. Some of the key areas of focus include improving police-community relations, fostering dialogue and critical thinking among youth, reviving traditions of tolerance, promoting inclusion of religious minorities, and supporting inclusive and democratic institutions.

One of the significant efforts is directed towards enhancing police-community relationships, which involves collaboration with national and provincial police departments to provide training, capacity building, and social media engagement. This aims to address the issues of mistrust and mistreatment, ultimately strengthening law enforcement in the country.

Another crucial area of focus is the promotion of dialogue, critical thinking, and peace education among the youth population in Pakistan. With a substantial portion of the population being under the age of 30, initiatives are targeted at creating sustainable mechanisms for dialogue and critical thinking, particularly within the higher education system, to counter intolerance and radicalization.

Additionally, USIP is engaged in supporting local cultural leaders, civil society organizations, and media production to revive local traditions that foster diversity, dialogue, and social change, countering extremist narratives and promoting acceptance of diversity.

Efforts to promote the inclusion of religious minorities and support democratic institutions are also integral to USIP's work. This involves collaborating with local peacebuilders, religious scholars, and state institutions to advocate for interfaith harmony, peaceful coexistence, and equitable inclusion of marginalized groups.

Moreover, special emphasis is given to empowering women in peacebuilding and democratic processes through research, advocacy, and capacity building, with a focus on gender as a cross-cutting theme across all USIP programs in Pakistan.
